2005 Are we in Burgundy?
2005 was a classic growing season for Pinot Noir: long, wet, cool spring, mild summer, with just enough heat to ripen everthing perfectly, and a long, warm fall. The grapes were homogenously ripe at harvest, with sugars ranging from 23.2-24.8. This season, since it rained once a week every week until June, we sprayed sulfur nearly twice as much as we normally do; this minimized mildew and rot, and the harvested grapes required much less sorting than usual. The resulting wine is paler than usual (although it will keep darkening during barrel aging), with a good acidity, alcohol, and fruit balance. The tannins are fine and silky, and the aromas especially refined and elegant, with excellent length.
