Black Pearl
A field blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, grown on steep terraced slopes at 2300ft. elevation is the basis for this wine. The Sangiovese component adds its juicy high-toned plummyness, and the Petit Verdot a herbal/spicy hint. Together, the four varieties unite in a unique, harmonious yet complex interplay. It clearly expresses the rocky Sierra Foothills terroir with its somewhat austere, upright structure and mineral/spice-dominated finish.
Tasting Notes
Tasting Date: 11/19/2004 Not knowing exactly when this will be "fully mature", I find it very enjoyable it right now. It's brimming with ripeness and juicy flavors, while still showing the purity and vitality of youth. Very complex, deep, and multi-faceted, it has a long, satisfying finish. This wine was described by one restaurant owner as Clos Saron's "most Californian wine" and I fully agree with this description, while at the same time wondering how many other California wines show such a distinctive sense of a place...
Tasting Date: 9/1/2003 Fragrant, round, and harmonious, with dark berries, ripe plum and a herbal/flowery side, silky tannins, and the constitution to age well for a couple of decades.
